A great choice for parents - care for your baby whilst caring for the environment

moltex eco nappy environmental award winner

Moltex Eco Disposable Nappies won the Good Environmental Choice Australia award in July 2009. This reward recognises environmental excellence and noted that Moltex Nappies were environmentally preferable to other disposable nappies available in Australia.  Moltex Eco Nappies have been shown in trials to be at least as effective as leading brands. The absorbency of Moltex is excellent with no additional padding required, even overnight.  The convenience of disposable nappies is unquestionable, however the environmental impact of conventional disposables has been well documented, and there's questions regarding possible health impacts on babies using conventional nappies. The impact of disposable nappies is directly related to the substances used in the manufacture of the nappy, the amount of resources used, how well the nappy works (how many are needed daily) and the method of disposal. The Moltex Eco nappy is good news on all of these fronts.

No perfumes, lotions, antioxidants, TBT, chlorine or latex (much better for sensitive skin)  Many conventional disposable nappies use synthetic perfumes to combat odour (ever noticed that "new baby smell"?) that can be harmful to sensitive baby skin.  In a wicked twist, the bleach residues and other chemicals found in many disposable nappies can react with urine, actually CAUSING odours.  Manufacturers use the synthetic perfumes to cover up this odour causing reaction.  Some conventional nappies contain synthetic lotions and are meant to offer waterproof capabilities, but they become rancid over time.  Chemical antioxidants are used in the lotions to make the retain freshness longer. Can you see how conventional nappies are layering harmful chemicals to cover up issues caused by the chemicals themselves?

Moltex Eco nappies have no lotions, and no need for antioxidants, which is better for baby, and better for the environment.

Moltex employ oxygen bleaching, making the nappies 100% chlorine-free (TCF).

Tea leaf extract is used to reduce odour & irritation.
Moltex Eco Nappies use pure natural green tea leaf to help minimise odour, which has also proven very effective in protecting against fungi, viruses and yeast, which can cause nappy rash. It naturally contains cell constructing substances such as vitamins A, B and C which are essential for cell metabolism.

100% degradable packaging and outer nappy lining.
Packaging used for Moltex’s Eco Nappies is made using 100% degradable maize starch and has perforations for easy re-use as a compost or bin bag. The 100% degradable outer lining of the nappy is permeable for air and vapours, enabling comfortable wear.

Moltex Eco Nappies are compostable.
Conventional disposable nappies make an alarming contribution to landfill in Australia.  Moltex Eco Nappies can be added to compost sites instead of to landfill.  Most of the nappy will break down and makes excellent compost for a wormery.  The minimal amount of super absorbent material used in the nappy (polyacrylite) gives excellent water retention to the compost and is widely used as a soil wetter, which is especially relevant to our Australian climate.

Quality-made and tested in Germany. Moltex nappies are made in Germany under fair industrial relations and rigorously enforced environmental policies.

FAQ - Moltex Eco Nappies Questions & Answers

What is the absorbent material in Moltex Eco Nappies?  They contain a mix of wood pulp, polyacrylate and cellulose. Polyacrylate is a super absorbent polymer (SAP) which will soak up and hold large quantities of water.

Why do they include SAP? SAP significantly improves the absorbency of the nappies. A nappy which doesn't contain SAP will not have the same ability to keep your baby dry. This means either baby is left with a wet bottom, leading to skin irritation and rashes, or more nappies will be required (and subsequently disposed of).  Many tests have been conducted on the effects of SAP in sanitary products that established that sodium polyacrylate is non toxic.  Also this super absorbent material, used minimally in the nappy, give excellent water retention properties when composted which is great for our climate and water shortage issues.

Is the Wood Pulp Bleached?  Moltex Eco Nappies are 100% chlorine free bleached, so there are no nasty chemicals exposed to baby's skin.

Is the Eco Nappy biodegradable? The outer protective layer of the Moltex Eco Nappy is biodegradable, whilst the inner of the nappies are compostable and have been composted successfully for many years.

How quickly do the nappies breakdown in a composter?  The speed the Moltex nappies break down depends on the type and size of the composter used.  Nappies should be added at a rate that your particular compost bin can handle.  The most efficient way to compost Moltex eco nappies is using earthworm composting often referred to as 'vermicomposting'.  The nappy will not fully break down, leaving the velcro tabs and parts of the inner lining.  Once the majority of the nappy has composted you can take the fragments out and put them in your regular waste bin. Think of the huge reduction in volume you send to landfill!!

Composting does take time and effort. To avoid having to remove the uncomposted segments of the nappy we recommend slitting the nappy and emptying the contents of the inner into the compost.  Compost needs to be regularly turned.  NOTE: nappies with solid waste should not be added to your compost as this makes it unsafe for vegetation and can spread disease.

TBT (tributyl tin) is another harmful environmental pollutant. It has a hormone like effect and even the smallest concentrations of TBT can harm people's immune system and impair their hormonal system.
